This is a ski built for one job: getting up the mountain as fast as humanly possible, then not falling apart on the way back down. Developed directly alongside Atomic's World Cup ski mountaineering athletes, the Backland 65 UL is the brand's dedicated race machine — the ski you reach for when the clock matters as much as the terrain.
At roughly 670 grams per ski, it's about as light as touring skis get, built around an ultralight wood core paired with a carbon-fiberglass layup that keeps things stiff enough to actually control at speed despite the minimal weight. Two carbon inserts add torsional rigidity where a ski this light would otherwise feel vague underfoot, translating into real power transmission on the descent rather than just fast, floppy skinning.
The tip geometry is where the ski earns its keep in variable snow — a slim, aggressive profile that slices through crust and crud rather than bouncing off it, with a built-in notch for lightning-quick skin transitions when every second in a race counts. Underneath, a World Cup base finish is tuned purely for glide, and a traditional camber underfoot (with just a touch of tip rocker) keeps the ski locked in and predictable when the descent gets technical.
This isn't a do-it-all backcountry ski, and it's not trying to be. It's a purpose-built tool for skimo racing, big vertical days, and anyone whose priority is moving fast uphill without giving up real control on the way down.
