The Backland 80 UL picks up where the old UL 78 left off, but with enough re-engineering that it deserves its own reputation rather than just riding on its predecessor's name. It's still built around the same core philosophy — ultralight touring performance that doesn't fold the moment things get technical — just refined.
The foundation is Atomic's Ultra Light Woodcore, a blend of wood species tuned for the right balance of low weight and durability, reinforced by a carbon backbone and carbon-fiberglass layers that give the ski real pop and stability at speed rather than the vague, noodly feel lighter skis often settle for. Atomic reworked the fiberglass layup specifically to add more energy into kick turns and more composure at higher speeds — the kind of refinement that matters most when you're deep into a long tour and getting tired.
A mostly cambered profile (85%) paired with Dura Cap sidewalls delivers confident edge hold on icy, exposed terrain, while the tail stays flat rather than rockered for extra grip when things steepen up. Up front, the HRZN 3D tip uses a perforated design to shave swing weight while still keeping the tip riding high in variable and deeper snow — small details that add up over a full day of touring.
