Hybrid bindings have always asked skiers to accept a compromise somewhere — either the downhill feel of a tech binding falls short of true alpine performance, or the alpine-grade power comes bolted to a weight penalty that ruins the uphill. The HY 13 Free is ATK's attempt to close that gap for good, and it comes remarkably close.
The trick is in how the toe and heel are laid out. Rather than the traditional pin binding geometry — front pins high, rear pins low, boot tipped slightly forward — the HY sits both pins flat on the ski in ski mode, eliminating that familiar ramp angle entirely. The result feels less like a tech binding wearing an alpine costume and more like the real thing: direct, planted, and responsive, with the kind of control and confidence normally reserved for a true alpine setup like the Look Pivot. Toe elasticity of roughly 18mm per side and heel elastic travel around 7-9mm give it real forgiveness through chop and hard landings, rather than the harsh, unforgiving snap-back you'd expect from a race-style tech toe.
None of that comes from cutting corners on build quality. Every structural piece — 22 per half pair — is machined from solid 7075 aluminum, no plastic shortcuts, which is a big part of why this binding holds up to genuinely aggressive skiing rather than just tolerating it. Transitions stay simple despite all that metal: raise the toe arms to walk, rotate them down to ski, and the Hy Brake System locks the ski brake automatically the moment you flip into walk mode — no fumbling with your pole to sort it out. On the way up, a unique negative heel position lets your heel sit slightly below the toe for more efficient striding on flats and low-angle approaches, particularly useful for freeride boots with limited cuff mobility, backed by two additional risers for steeper terrain.
At 675g per binding, it's not the lightest way up the skin track — but that's the tradeoff by design. This is a binding for skiers who tour to ski hard, not the other way around: freeriders and big-mountain skiers who refuse to give up real downhill performance just because they're earning their turns.
